The Magic of Stem Cells in Reversing Hearing Loss
Roberta Singer
Recent progress has been made in steps to regenerate inner ear hair cells, which when lost are the cause of sensorineural hearing loss. The first-ever human trial to explore the use of stem cell therapy to regain hearing is about to begin in England. The treatment targets the root cause of the type of hearing loss associated with aging. This experimental treatment is designed to regrow these damaged delicate neural structures which are responsible for detecting sound. Embryonic stem cells will be transplanted into the cochlea which may then mature to become functional hair cells (Neoscope, July12,2025.)
