2 Free Ways To "Aid" Hearing

Roberta Singer

Firstly, remember to use your vision during conversation:
 1. There are important cues received from looking at facial expression, lip movement and gestures.
2. Wear your glasses or contacts.
3. Turn on the lights and open the shades.
4. Face one another.
5. Pick a good seat in group listening situations.
6. Try to view the speaker face on, not at an angle.

Secondly, reduce background noise when possible:
1. Turn off noise sources (especially the television!)
2. Go to quiet restaurants.
3. Request a quiet table at the restaurant.
4. Walk away from the washing machine, dryer, dishwasher that is in use.
5. Turn off the car radio and close the car windows.

These are free and easy to do. Spread the word!

Help for Hearing Loss Sought by the Scientific Community

Roberta Singer

Recently, researchers at MIT and Mass Eye and Ear have successfully applied a combination of drugs to the inner ear hair cells of mice that were damaged, resulting in sensorineural hearing loss.  The effect has been to partially regenerate structures that have been the root of inner ear hearing loss due to normal aging and excessive noise exposure.  Work is continuing to be done to examine ways of extending the life of these hair cells and translate this into helping humans.  The future may hold other treatments for hearing loss at some time, in addition to cochlear implants and hearing aids.  Excerpts were published in “Cell Reports’ issue of April 11, 2017. #sensorineuralhearingloss,#haircellregeneration,#hearingloss

March Madness Related Hearing Loss!

Roberta Singer

It happens every year at this time. Basketball enthusiasts across the country become united in a common cause: March Madness! The NCAA Division I Basketball Championship games this year include our home team, the Rhody Rams. All eyes will be on the top teams vying for #1. For some lucky people, the opportunity to see a live game is one that is no doubt exciting, but that excitement can come with a hidden danger: hearing loss.

Bigger arenas mean bigger sound; adding to the noise level are enormous high quality speaker systems. Some large arenas feature as many as 60 speakers aimed directly at the spectators for maximum amplification. Between the pep band, the buzzers, the announcers, the loud music and thousands of screaming fans including an enthusiastic student section, it all adds up to a potentially dangerous noise level.

Hearing protection for loud sporting events is crucial, especially for children, and the solution is simple. A simple pair of foam or polyurethane earplugs can easily be obtained from a drugstore for just a few dollars and are effective at blocking your ears from harmful noise. Be smart and protect your ears. You have only one pair.
